Crouching Lion, Hidden Power

Okay, the title is just an excuse for being really cheesy. I like cheesy sometimes.

It’s AUR!! I have tried to draw him before, but he never came out… There are other attempts which are so bad they are not touching my computer let alone the interwebs. But this one is actually kind of recognizable, sort of. (I think part of it is that his new character art makes him look more ‘shaggy’ and less ‘mullet-y’. lol!) I wanted to try really getting detailed with costume design, too, because you know how my characters all wear 1) tunic 2) pants 3) boots 4) belt – and that’s pretty much all they need. Except Ceniro, because he is a little more realistic. (I don’t think Ceniro has underwear anymore, though. X D Tmi?) Anyway, and except Esgalwen, because she wears a dress. Anyway anyway, so that’s why you don’t recognize what Aur is wearing. Because I went crazy.

Colour will be coming on this one soon! He deserves it.

I drew this because I read through Darkstar again (fantastic story – I cry every time KluYa shows up and says goodbye T_T) and I was thinking really hard about the voices – Ben’s ‘deep warm golden’ voice, Kip’s ‘now, now…’ Cecil’s heroic tenor, Kain’s deep snarky voice, Edge’s irritable baritone, the huge differences between Pren/Joran/Rosa/Rydia, and… Chase. He’s just a little kid. But if you look between the cracks, he’s recovering more and more subconscious awareness of who he used to be (AAAUUUUURRRR 😀 ) or else the author uses him to fill plot holes – JUST KIDDING, AYWREN! Anyway, so I am a big ChAur fan and any excuse is good enough to try and draw him. He’s a lion-bishie! XD

By the time I sat down to RE-write Darkstar for the last time, I knew about Chase’s connections in Shimmer and Dreigiau. This played a big part in the way I attempted to approach his character… this strange little kid on the brink of something much larger. Chase’s character first developed for Darkstar many years ago, but I always knew he was something more than he appeared to be.

When I started piecing together things in Dreigiau and looking for history, Aur popped up and I knew I found the perfect bridge between the two stories. When I went to write Shimmer, likewise. His character just began to expand in a quiet way in all stories… so yes, it is very intentional what I’ve done with him in Darkstar.

Aur is quiet, though. He hasn’t told me everything yet. I don’t know if he ever will. He currently clings to his Chase persona and attempts to put the past behind him. I think at this point in Wayrift, he sees this as his only chance for a real “normal” lifetime.

Eeee! Aywren speaks! I always love hearing about the evolution of your stories. (Sorry for leaving this comment lonely for ages.)

Interesting that he seeks a ‘normal’ lifetime… He’s pretty enigmatic, and I can see why he’d do that, since he wants to fit in and not disturb anyone, but… Well, maybe it’s just wishful thinking because I like the strong, silent types! XD Among other types.

I like not knowing everything about him. He is probably my favourite character of yours, but he needs wiggle room to keep that mystique.
