Selyn Tekeri: General of Malachor

Decided I needed to paint something. Painted Selyn as in the past; worked up an armour design that looks reasonable for that of a Jedi serving in the Old Republic’s Armed Forces. Also tried something TOTALLY new and WAY outside my comfort zone: the sumi-e brushes in Corel Painter 12. Sumi-e is so incredibly gestural that it’s the complete antithesis of my normal ultra-controlled style. I think I’m starting to understand them; I’m not supposed to draw a whole picture using one brush, but combine them to achieve the effect of using different real-life brushes, strokes, and techniques. This might seem obvious, but it wasn’t obvious to me a couple hours ago. I don’t think it turned out too bad for my first attempt! Selyn the Exile coming later.

Ceniro

Decided to paint Ceniro a while back, cuz I love him and he’s taken a couple levels in badass thanks to the best girlfriend ever.. Got stalled on his sleeve cuffs for a bit, but then I slapped something together and called it done. It’s entirely possible he’s fighting for his life in the Battle of Armica against Milton. (But not yet at the part where he gets his arm chopped off.)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRO

kevinbirthday2016

You know one thing my brother is good at? Shredding Plantera (and Skeletron Prime and Fishron) with the Megashark shooting Crystal Bullets (although they’ve probably released better gear by now) while wearing the Princess Dress dyed with Flame Dye and the stylish Regal Cloak.

Yes, I know Plantera shows up in jungle, not regular caves, and gets mad if you try to take him outside. Yes, I know it’s highly unlikely that these particular three bosses would show up at the same time (for one thing Skeletron Prime only shows up at night). …But it made for a cool picture.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MONSTER

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM

So painting directly from a photo isn’t a terrible experience, although it is time-consuming. I managed to speed up considerably once I discovered that ALT turns the brush into the eyedropper tool… yeah, I know, the most basic of shortcuts. : P And in the end it just looks kind of like I put a filter on a photo. Which my dad took of a bee on the apple tree a couple weeks ago, that this is. Anyhow, thank goodness for the blend tool, it is my favourite. Now if only it worked across layers like the Photoshop smudge tool…

Happy birthday, Mom!
