Self-portrait in red

Will I wear this at grad?

Will I wear this at grad?

Ugggggh, this is a bad picture. One reason that might be is that it’s of me. -_-7 Mom took me shopping for nice clothes, including a performance dress. Well, I really liked this floor-length scarlet thing, and I thought it was very pretty. We didn’t buy it, so I drew a picture of it. But it’s a terrible picture. I think my shoulders are too wide, or something, and my head is a funny shape. And my arms look like blobs.

Roderigo – Chilean guitarist

Music!

Music!

This guy is an entertainer on a BC Ferries ferry that was taking us from Vancouver, where we’d been to visit my (Grand-) Aunt Sets and to see Bard on the Beach, the Shakespeare festival. I don’t remember what we saw that year, but it could have been Twelfth Night or Macbeth or something. Anyway, Mom went and talked to this guy after he was done, and found out he lives in Campbell River. Isn’t that odd. Dad said, while he was playing, that I should do a picture of him, since I had my sketchbook with only a couple of pages left (mostly scribbles of titles from the Provincial music festival). So I did. And I noted: “he had a capo but there’s a baby stroller in front so I can’t see”.

Pianos

Black and white this picture would be in any case

This picture was drawn while I was attending the 2004 BC Provincial Music Festival, and it is of the stage of the hall at UVic where it occured. I brought my sketchbook, and I used it a lot for scrap paper in writing down what I thought of various pieces, but I also used it for drawing and this is the result. Having the Provincials on the Island is really very convenient. Last year it was in Prince George and it was rather expensive. I’m not sure whether I hope it’s again in Victoria, or at least in Vancouver, or that I don’t go this year. Anyhow, realism is demonstrated by the sketch above, even if it’s not done very well. I think the second piano was for the seniors’ concerti. I was in intermediate that year.

Self Portrait

AAhhhhh! It's a head!

AAhhhhh! It’s a head!

I chose an unusual subject for a picture this time: me! Aaaaah!

As I wrote at the bottom of the page: “It is strange to see a decapitated, frozen copy of myself staring back at me.” I’ll say. It still gives me a little shivers. And I got my haircut since then, so I look different… Well, it’s not bad, but I have a bigger nose than that.

Dead Bird

Juvenile robin

This picture is of a juvenile robin that hit our deck window and died doing it. -_-7 We looked it up in a bird book. With nothing better to do with it, Dad suggested I draw a picture of it and practice actually drawing stuff in real life. So… I did. End of story. Ta-da!

Old Ones

Merry, Will, and Captain Toms

Merry, Will, and Captain Toms

This is a picture of three great characters from the pentology (like a trilogy of five) called The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. The bearded man is Merriman Lyon, a mysterious figure who everyone seems to know casually. The elderly man on the right is Captain Toms, a kindly old seafarer who lives in a big stone house with his lovely red dog, Rufus. The boy in the middle is one of the most main characters: Will Staunton, an eleven year old boy who wakes up on his birthday and finds the world upside down and discovers a startling heritage. He’s my favourite character. Although Will is eleven, in ‘reality’ he is an ageless, powerful Old One, one of an ancient group called the Light (who are fighting against the Dark, no surprise there) who seem to centre on Welsh myths like King Arthur. All these three in this picture are Old Ones. Will is the youngest and last, and Merriman is the eldest. I liked The Dark is Rising very much.

I just learned from DiscDrive that the phrase “no strings attached” comes from the silk industry – if there was even a slight flaw, they would put a string on the end of the cloth.

Heroes All

These people are cool. Or something…

Here are all my heroes (people whom I admired) for 2003. They are-! Legolas, Link, Trent, Wedge, Flairé, and Sain. They are sitting on my couch in my living room, with personable equipment. Legolas and Link are, obviously, looking at the Master Sword. Trent is sitting quietly with his violin. I think he came out quite well. I’m not good at drawing ‘real people’. He’s very good as both a violinist and a fiddler, and when I hear him play in one style, I feel like he should focus on that style… until I hear him play in the other style. He played this beautiful Dvorak piece at the local music Festival once, and I just loved it. Wedge is reading one of my X-Wing series books, and he didn’t come out so well. Sain is posing, because he’s a goofball. Actually, he looks sort of like Oswin here.

Flairé is playing a (stringless) harp, and now he’s officially introduced, I suppose.
Flairé: Hi. Good to meet you people.
I’ll add a biography page sometime very soon, I think.
Flairé: That’s a good idea. No one knows me yet, and I’m your best friend!
Eheheh. Go away.
Flairé: Righto. … Why am I so short in that picture?
Shoo!
Flairé: I’m going! Bye!

He talks too much, but he’s nice. I use him in all my (adapted rules) Dungeons and Dragons games.

These people were drawn over a period of time. Legolas was drawn first, in November, and Link took from November to December. The others are labelled, so Sain was drawn on the 13th of December, Trent on the 16th and 17th, and Wedge and Flairé on the 17th.

Edit: The kalma above in the picture could actually be Flair.

Yesterday I went to the local Games Workshop and built a pile of elven rocks with a waterfall on it. Nifty, but I’ll make the next one on my own when I don’t have time constraints. It’ll turn out even better!

Battle of Squid and Whale

Monster mash

Monster mash

Today, we have something different! This is a drawing of a sperm whale fighting a giant squid. I remember I had the weird idea that I was going to paint – paint – a whole series of these things and then sell them for a lot of money! Weird me… Anyway, I think that this picture is good, even now. Even the water turned out nice. I think I had help from a ‘how to draw’ book, though. I think that squid is going to lose at least one tentacle, anyway. I wonder if the skinniness of the whale’s tail is realistic, or if it’s too skinny… I like this picture still.
