Ephraim’s Story: Chapter 11: Scorched Sand (the other side)

Chapter 10: Father and Son          Chapter 12: Ruled by Madness

Chapter 11: Scorched Sand

We rode a bare half-hour later. Syrene had dispatched Julia all the long way back to Frelia to bring news to King Hayden of Grado Keep’s capture.

Despite our haste, it was a long way from Grado to Jehanna. By the end of the first day, we were right in the middle of the high hills a short way north-east from Grado’s capital, hills large enough to cast a rain-shadow from the humid southern breezes. The ground was already dryer, and as we hurried on the next day, we saw more and more cacti and less grass. We turned north around midday, seeing few other than scattered nomads and herders.

Partway through the afternoon, we received another message, informing us that Rausten had indeed joined to Eirika’s group, but that it wouldn’t be enough to save her against both Grado generals. A Frelian army was en route, but they were even further away than we were. If we did not save Eirika, no one would.

The third day I rose early and, taking all who were not already exhausted by the march, came at last near to Jehanna Hall, an ancient stone structure set in a flaxen sea of sand, with an oasis and a few villages clustered nearby.

Jehanna Hall was burning. Continue reading

Frelia’s Finest: Part 3 (rewrite)

Part 2 this way

Part 3

Joshua was Prince of Jehanna.

Well. I hadn’t seen that one coming. It was almost a bigger shock than Eirika rejecting me. Actually, Joshua was having far worse a day than I was, because he was no sooner revealed to us as Prince than he became King as well, for his mother Ismaire died in his arms.

I formally gave him the letter from my father, and then someone set the hall on fire.

The first we knew of it was a soldier came rushing up to all us royals. “Sire! Sire! Fires have broken out all through the hall!”

“What!?” cried the new King. This was too much for him. His mentor betraying him, his mother dying – he needed someone to help him out.

“Someone soaked the wall hangings in oil and set fire to them! It’s a deathtrap!”

“We must get out!” I called, turning towards Tana and her winged horse.

“Mother… no… I will return…” Joshua cried. Seth was already pulling him onto his horse. Where was Eirika? Oh, with L’Arachel. She was all right. Continue reading

Frelia’s Finest: Part 1 (rewrite)

Part 1

An arrow zipped past my shoulder as I ducked behind the wall of Castle Mulan. Nocking another arrow to my own string, I stood up and sent feathery death down on the peon who had dared attack me.

“How goes it?” I called to my general, Kalvin.

“Not good,” he called back. “Captain Misha’s unit is under heavy mage-fire. I’ve redirected our healers to that area.”

“Mage fire?” I looked around at the gates beside me. The enemy’s battering rams were getting closer, but our own mages were blasting at them, and our cavalry was ready in the courtyard. “I’ll take care of it.”

“Thank you, Prince Innes!”

I nodded and, crouching, walked swiftly over to the other side of the castle where our pegasus knights were fending off a storm of fireballs and lightening bolts. Pegasus were naturally resistant to magic attacks, but we only had one squad, and there were too many mages for them to deal with. We’d already lost four, a third of them.

I was not resistant to magic, but I was agile and my arrows struck faster than the knights. I revealed myself and pegged three mages in the space of a breath, drawing new arrows from my quiver in the blink of an eye. Then I had to throw myself down and roll as they became aware of the new threat and aimed several eye-searing spells in my general direction. Continue reading

About Ephraim’s Story: Chapter 10

Um. Well. That was a giant long chapter… Honestly, those guys talk more than my guys! XD But anyway, I’m a little closer to finishing this story now. I am hoping I can recycle dialogue from Eirika’s Story, because I’m a cheating cheater who is lazy. : P

Part of the reason this chapter took up so much space is because the game itself doesn’t make a lot of sense. Ephraim, in the game, just appears in the castle with his army, with no explanation of how he got there, and I felt an explanation was needed. Also there was a lot of smoothing out to do, since the dialogue is occasionally loltastic, and I wanted to spread the dialogue out a bit, hence some line-trading. Continue reading

Ephraim’s Story: Chapter 10: Father and Son

Chapter 9: Fluorspar’s Oath          Chapter 11: Scorched Sand

Chapter 10: Father and Son

Barely a day and a night later, we stood looking down on Grado City, the capital of the Grado Empire. It had been so long since I had seen it, and it was the same as ever – proud dark stone walls rising up out of a lush green valley. The Keep stood at the head of the city, even taller. We had not encountered any resistance since Hanarka, which was suspicious to me, but I would take whatever seemed like good fortune I could get. The capital itself seemed normal, if a little quieter than usual; she seemed unaware that a hostile force was camped almost at her very gates.

The last time I was there, two years ago, it had been for my education. I’d studied martial arts with Duessel, but the intellectual side of my studies I was hopeless in. If it hadn’t been for Lyon’s patient help, I would have flunked every test and then some. Books just held no interest for me. Lyon, on the other hand, absorbed them like a sponge does water, but was defeated soundly by Eirika in combat, so he came to me for additional sparring practice. He and I had a good friendship, each helping the other. And of course he had a good friendship with Eirika; she was more sympathetic than I was, and when I was a jerk, she would comfort him while I snickered at them both or stood shamefaced.

Being a kid was pretty fun in Grado, books aside. Continue reading

Flaria and Tharash

So I got a comment on this picture of Flaria and Tharash, from Yllamse, saying “Do I even want to know? XD” so I thought I would answer that in rather too much detail. :3

Flaria’s been a Tharash fangirl for a while – somehow, he caught her eye, even with his ragamuffin scruffiness (generally she goes for clean boys…). Then she found out that he could use big impressive words to describe space and time and metaphysics and magic, which led to melodramatic swooning on her part. He, on the other hand, doesn’t know what to do with her since she clearly likes him (whut?) and isn’t afraid of him (and his potentially world-destroying powers) (wow!). She calls him ‘the adorascruffy voidmage!’ when she isn’t calling him ‘Tharash-dear’. Continue reading

I Know You’re Out There Somewhere: Chapter 13

Another chapter is done! I’m very close to the end. I don’t know how long the final battle will take to write but it’s just around the corner.

But it’s back to school tomorrow, so that will take priority. And I still have to see how to fix the light in my ceiling… I really don’t know how to put the new bracket in!

That’s all for now. I’m going to practice a bit before bed. Also I should eat, but there’s nothing I want to eat. : P

EDIT: Torrigan’s player has mentioned that Torrigan had a character arc, but unfortunately there isn’t really enough story left to flesh it out, so I’ll be leaving it up to you. Suffice it to say (as Torrigan says) that he’s not quite as nice as he used to be. We’ll see how well I can add that. However, I’m still not interested in the war, so it’s staying more or less vague and in the background.

I Know You’re Out There Somewhere: Chapter 12

YAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY I got a chapter done. : P Credit goes to Thari for helping me with the battle, not by telling me what to write, but by telling me what to think about in regards to what happens in battles. : )

New cameos! Kaisten, (c) Kaist, and Kip, (c) Wren!

Not much to say? Having the best break ever, except that means I’m running out of news. Also apparently we DO have Skyward Sword, although I’m still tempted to buy it for the soundtrack CD, because otherwise I will have to wait several months before I hear it.

Also melted chocolate is just as delicious as unmelted chocolate. Particularly if it’s Belgian.

Also we have a foot of snow! Yay!

I Know You’re Out There Somewhere: chapter 11

Yaaaaaaay the long-awaited Chapter 11 is up! This is only half of what was originally going to be Chapter 11. That would have been a doozy. But anyway so Chapter 12 will have even more of this emotional crap, though perhaps with less attempted seduction. And I really mean that ‘perhaps’. Man, I should put a warning on these chapters.

Four new cameos in this chapter! Marcus is perhaps a little OOC for who he is in his own universe, but since he has a different position in this universe, hopefully he fits in while retaining some semblance of who he is? Apparently I got Lu spot on, which is always nice!

I guess this is FiDaNoMo? Finish that Dang Novel Month? Yeah?

I Know You’re Out There Somewhere: NaNoWriMo2011 – chapter 10

Another chapter! Slightly edited; skipping some of the torture prawns that were in the original. I don’t know what drow are like, soooo here’s my guess.

Very sleepy. Too many early mornings. I have only early mornings until Thursday, and I’ve had them since Friday. Boo. At least I’m almost healed. My voice is still a bit off, and my nose is still a bit odd, but I’m pretty much back to normal.

Also, too many projects. This will be the last chapter you get for a little while, although I do know what happens next chapter, vaguely. I have some visual arts to do in my free time. Aaaand then there’s the music I have to learn… Tried to get some work done on the Kakadu tonight. Am concerned that I am trying to learn my long-term music too fast. Need to spend next weekend solidly in a practice room. Continue reading
