In the Shadows Beyond This World: Chapter 12: Cuccoos Coming Home to Roost

After a lot of sleep, finally got enough energy to tackle this chapter. And watching a walkthrough of the Arbiter’s Grounds helped too, because it’s been a while since I played that one.

– Franz finally has development! In fact, he’s almost oversaturated in development! And maybe it happens in an unrealistically short timeframe, but he’s on a timer, so we’ve gotta deal. : P

– I hope the altered dungeon is interesting and full of good surprises. Also Link seems to be a bit of a derp in this chapter.

– Nabooru was kind of the most undeveloped/boring Sage in OoT next to Rauru, but hey! She is a lot more interesting in my head! I wonder how that happened… First she revealed stuff way too early, stuff that I thought was coming at the end of the chapter, and then she insisted on coming along with the boys. That’s fine. She can do exposition. She’s very willful.

– not sure I would include the Spinner in future rewrites. It’s just too ridiculous, you know? It’s kind of awesome in the game, but it’s really limited from a narrative point of view.

All right, here’s this massive thing. Didn’t even edit, tonight. If there are problems… let me know. : P

I feel like drawing Franz. I probably should.

In the Shadows Beyond This World: Chapter 11: Evil’s Bane In Hand

Today’s notes:

– this chapter took forever to write, not entirely sure why. (Partly why is because I was looking at Zelda pictures on DA again. For every picture I’ve already seen, there’s five more waiting to be found. XP ) It’s a bit quieter than some of the others, but it still has its badass moments. I like Link’s confidence. He’s acting more like a hero and less like a hen.

– the part with the bacon was written fairly early this morning, when I could smell one of my neighbours cooking bacon. It made me hungry. DX

– the hide-and-seek probably wasn’t necessary.

– this is an odd chapter and it didn’t really go the way I thought it would. Some plot holes. I may need to go over this part of the story with a sledgehammer or steamroller or two, just to smooth things out so they WORK. I’m not happy with this chapter at all, and I’m hoping the next one will be better. I hope it’s not because I’ve been surfing DA looking at pictures (and accidentally catching wind of other people’s headcanons and OCs and things. (Hey, aren’t you glad that one of the things I didn’t put in was Dark Link sexually harassing Link? Yeeeaaah.)). But in any case… I may rewrite this chapter again from scratch this evening. Or tomorrow. Sometime when I haven’t been driving myself crazy.

– FRANZ WHY YOUR CHARACTER NO DEVELOP come on, lad. Rewrite, perhaps. Or next chapter at the very least.

– I don’t remember why the next chapter is called what it is. Hoping I remember before I have to go and write it.

EDIT: I AM REWRITING THIS WHEN I GET BACK FROM WORK

EDIT2: I may have written in some new plot holes, but I feel like the chapter is much more interesting now, even if it’s even slower than before. Also Franz actually says things now. He reminds me of Gyoriing. And I managed to salvage most of the words I already wrote! Yay! Okay, so now tomorrow I can keep on with the story.

In the Shadows Beyond This World: Chapter 10: Zant’s Victory

This chapter is REEEAAALLY LONG. If I were to rewrite it, I might cut down some of the dialogue in the second half.

Some notes!

– I totally changed the battle with the Water Temple boss. I just got this dramatic vision, and chase scenes are exciting (and, when you’re watching them, scary), so I went and changed it to something I think is kind of really cool and exciting. I’m kind of realizing I should be making Link more awesome in general, but then it’s a balance between putting him in danger so there’s at least a modicum of tension. But anyway in the NEXT chapter (not this one) he’ll get the Master Sword, and then we’ll really see some fireworks from him. It’s a character development thing.

– I really don’t know where Link’s masks went. I think he lost them in the years between MM and LA. Except Demon, obviously, but he’s not really strictly a mask.

– I’m really hoping it wasn’t previously a plot point in one of my other stories whether Navi could talk to animals or not. I’m trying to work with a very firm line between “here’s who can talk to whom”. Continue reading

In the Shadows Beyond This World: Chapter 8: Bad Timing

I wasn’t really feeling the fights at the beginning of this chapter, so they’re kind of lame. : / But I had some fun trying to reconcile OoT Hyrule and TP Hyrule. Also I may have to increase my target word count because I am so not even half-way through and I’m already almost at 50,000. Pretty sure this story is going to come in at 100,000+ words. That would be interesting. I don’t think I’ve had a story so long before. Not that long stories are better, but I’m not writing this story to be concise. I went into it thinking ‘this time, I’m just going to write as much as I want to about side characters and stuff’. There’s still more action in it than I thought there would be, and I’m still not fully loose and writing without feeling boundaries on how much rambling is appropriate. Which is probably good for you guys. XD

Next chapter is for Franz! Whoo!

I went for another run today. I’m pretty sure that what I’m going through right now is the opposite of depression. Like, in the winter I get Seasonal Affective Disorder, and this last winter I had extra issues that made life difficult, and I couldn’t do very much on my own. Well, now I’m doing things (on my own, even) and feeling… not always happy, but positive. I wonder if it’s caused by being solar-powered now that it’s summer and there’s more daylight, if this is a natural annual bio-rhythm thing, or if it’s something else that I don’t know about yet, or if it’s something that I’ve always had and am just becoming aware of it now that I can slow down and listen to it.

Kind of want to start drawing things again. So I can do fantastic fanart of all the things I am a fan of.

I really like this new band I’m listening to, Genticorum, and I really like the Zelda TP OST… I like Zelda music… I must acquire more of it. Legally, if at all possible. But that assumes I have money. I must acquire money (by making music!) so I can acquire more music. Yesssss.

In the Shadows Beyond This World: Chapter 7: Sick Zora

Whoo! Today was eventful. I posted the last chapter, and then I went for a run, and it was great, and then I wrote the next chapter, and then I went to practice organ and found out that I’m rushing all through the fugue in my beloved Buxtehude C major, and now I’m back and just edited this last chapter. I really want to keep practicing organ. But I was sweating like a pig in that organ loft, which was still warm even though it was long past sunset. Man. But recording things really works in showing up things that aren’t right. So I’ll keep working on that!

THERE’S TOO MUCH MUSIC TO LEARN

So we’ll see how many chapters I write tomorrow. I didn’t get around to doing laundry, so I’ll have to do that tomorrow morning before I go on a run, hopefully a run with my friend, and then in the evening I am considering going back to the church and practicing some more even though it’s not my normal practice day. If I go late enough at night, no one will know or care. : )

I do want to keep writing. I wrote 12,000 words today, according to my Camp NaNoWriMo profile! Hee! If I do that much tomorrow, then I’ll have introduced Franz to the story! I’m excited for Franz. I keep adding characters, and Twilight Princess is already full of interesting characters! Just wait until the Resistance shows up! But anyway, in this chapter, Midna has some things to say, and Navi and Rana have some things to say back to her. o_O Goron Link also gets a cameo, heh. And can you guess what talisman Midna is talking about that protects against the Twilight? Here’s a hint… it’s not from Twilight Princess… it’s from a much earlier game! XD

In the Shadows Beyond This World: Chapter 5: Epona’s Return

I went to Sunfest yesterday! So I didn’t get any writing done. Or editing this chapter to post here. But I did listen to some great French-Canadian music (Genticorum is cool!) and a live salsa band and a crazy Romanian band.

Chapter 6 is being hard and I’m only a couple pages in. : P

Chapter 4: Faith

Chapter 5: Epona’s Return

There was an air vent out of the basement, and he used it to struggle out into the open.

He emerged behind the chicken coop and sniffed experimentally. He couldn’t sense any other pieces of Light in the area, and hoped he was done with collecting it.

He was on his way to the Spirit’s Pool, which was tucked away into a corner of the canyon – if it had been there when he’d visited Kakariko before, he could understand why he missed it. Goddesses, the last time he’d visited the place felt like it was in a past life. Continue reading

In the Shadows Beyond This World: Chapter 4: Faith

Another chapter for you guys! Gonna make a start on the next one.

Chapter 3: Martyr Complex

Chapter 4: Faith

Link scrambled to his feet, shaking his head to clear it. His sword was already in his hand, although he didn’t remember drawing it.

Before him stood a mighty Stalfos, with eyes glowing blue, and ancient, weathered armour hanging off its bones. The plates of the armour were covered in intricate designs, including the Triforce. Link guessed this must have been a great Knight of Hyrule. It was too bad it was dead and evil, now.

Navi, Rana, and Naeri were nowhere in sight. In fact, the two of them stood in a vast foggy plain, with rocky scrub beneath their feet.

“Link,” said a voice, and the jaws of the Stalfos moved. The voice was hardly deeper than his own, not what he expected from the tall warrior spirit that stood before him.

“Huh?” Link said stupidly. Continue reading

In the Shadows Beyond This Word: Chapter 2: Reunions

This chapter perhaps not so good. I’m not sure. But I think it’s better than before, although it does combine a lot of the chapters from the previous version. I know Link doesn’t talk a lot, but it’s a bit frustrating having him not being able to talk at all. I guess that’s my talkative nature, though! (Hint: I’m a lot like Rana, except I have different neuroses and wasn’t trained by ninjas.) Part of my frustration also comes from the fact that I don’t like describing things that happened in the game, in cutscenes. Either it’s not really that important (Ordona emerging from her pool) or my writing skills can’t sum up the awesome enough (Link discovering he’s in human form again). Although I’ve been up all night writing this. When I edit it, I’ll probably be able to make that last bit more awesome.

I did some reading on the Zelda Wiki about the official Timeline for the Zelda games, and it’s kind of depressing! Especially the differing fates of Ocarina Link. I kind of prefer my own headcanon. Which I guess is why it’s my headcanon. Also I’m really not sure I can accept Spirit Tracks into my headcanon in the first place. Maybe yes, maybe no. It’s difficult just accepting that Old Hyrule was destroyed in Wind Waker, you know? Hyrule can’t be GONE-gone. It’s like, the life of this entire land only lasted a few thousand years, from its (second) settlement after Skyward Sword to its submersion and eventual destruction in Wind Waker. Can’t it go on forever? I know there were periods of darkness and war in Hyrule’s history, but that’s what the Heroes are for, is to stop the darkness. And sometimes they don’t get a happy ending (the Hero who took on the Shadow Tribe comes to mind) but often they do, because they go through blood, sweat, and tears to banish the evilness trying to take over Hyrule and they kind of deserve it (a happy ending). Basically I have too many feels for the Zelda series and its handsome hero and its lovely land. And also I can’t deal with three timelines at once, that’s just weird.

Man, I think I might have stayed up a mite too long. That last paragraph is rather formless.

Also, having watched Skyward Sword, I think in that game Link was able to physically acquire the Triforce and use it not just because it’s super awesome and about time it was actually featured in a Zelda game besides the first one, but also because there is a Triforce of good characters. Link and Zelda are there, sure, but there’s also Groose, and for the first time, we have a Power good guy. It’s kind of awesome.
