Zela’s Family

The whole pile at once

The whole pile at once

This is Zela and Flaer’s complete family. From L-R, T-B (top to bottom), Flaer, the hero of the story, who has since had a slight makeover, Zela, the heroine of the story, Flairé, looking wierd and the narrator of at least part of it, Flaria, the token gracious female, Menad, who’s looking quite a beauty here despite the fact that he goes evil at some point, Marteth, who we met yesterday and who still has stupid hair and this time a stupid face as well, Bayn, wearing Griffin-land style clothes and looking a bit odd (jaw too straight), Gullac, winking roguishly at the viewer because that’s what he does, and finally, Mathaning, the naive innocente. This is the best picture of him.

So, finally, the whole of Zela’s family has been represented graphically at least once. Good!

Zela playing and dancing

Stop watching me, mortal.

Stop watching me, mortal.

Oooh! Pretty! It’s Zela, doing stuff!

I like the one on the left, dancing. Her arms are a bit long… okay, they’re way too long, and her shoulder is too low. But, her pose in general is good, and her sketchy skirt is nice, and her face is just about perfect, and her hair is about three times as long as it usually is, but it’s so pretty… I think I was having a way-too-long-hair thing at this time; I mean, look at Flaer.

The one on the left contains a sort of design for a kalma’eiric violin. It looks a little silly to me now. And she’s wearing a shorter skirt for a change, and her hair is loose for a change… which is rather pretty as well. I like her sleeves the best of all, though. And I get to show off my terrible un-mastery of perspective, as well.

Backflip!

Now Zela is showing off… badly… Again, I didn’t draw enough curve in the back as a whole. I’m not doing too good on the shading either.
“This sure is a family of acrobats” I wrote on the bottom of the page.

Ton o’ Flairé sketches

Jumbled dismembered people

Jumbled dismembered people

Um….? I did more Flairé fanart. Jumbled around in random connexion to each other. I think I started with the one that’s sitting on a flat surface, right in the middle.
Flairé: I want more clothes, please!
Then, before I did the hair, I did the big head behind him. So the hair never got done. Super shading happened, but not very convincingly. Then I did a head with pretty hair and a sword, except that little bit is pretty awful compared to Flairé. I think Flaria stole his sword and is masquerading as her brother. Down at the bottom is Zela on the left and Flairé on the right (Flaer I was not interested in at this time, despite being an older copy of the same person. You will know instantly when I became interested in Flaer again, in some months). The point of those two was to illustrate the subtle difference between a kalla (woman elf) and a kalma (man elf). They both have slender waists and hips and shoulders, but the kalla has the slightest bit of a curve to her chest. So that settled that problem.

I’m going for my sword… you’d better take cover… not that it will help…

This is the finished version of this sketch. It’s pretty good for my first full-sized CG, considering I didn’t know how to CG shiny eyes, or shiny hair (I only found that out a few months ago, didn’t I?) or how to use the blur tool. So, the highlights are painfully blatent, on the skin, but the hand looks rather good. The hair I did by drawing streaks on the brown and using the smudge tool to rub them in. I have Adobe 5.0, I think. Because I only knew about the smudge tool and not the blur tool, there are some white spots where it didn’t overlap properly, like on the back of the jaw. Then I don’t know how to draw ears still, and the tiny detail work on the swordhilt isn’t nearly as complicated as I’d like, and the clothing looks a little flat. But, all in all, it’s my first try, and it’s okay for that. I just want to say the shirt design has changed since then, and now the little stitchings are on the inside shirt which makes more sense to me.

Elvish Parade

Ooh, they're so shiiiiiiny

Ooh, they’re so shiiiiiiny

I love this picture, even though it’s technically not finished. There should be more crowds, for one thing; that’s why the buildings on the left aren’t done. I decided that 15 was enough knights, including Flaer and Zela – for that’s who the two unhelmeted riders are. There’s so much in this picture, like several swooning girls, talking, excited riders, city, unicorns, blah blah blah… I’m afraid to touch it in case Zela’s hair gets smudged. The horses are still not great, but they are better than some, especially Yoeath, Zela’s unicorn, who was here still called Mist. Also, the armour looks actually pretty well developed, even if it’s not armour that a normal knight person would wear. It’s been skewed by Fire Emblem. Sorry.

This picture was inspired by the Dream March from Copland’s Red Pony Suite.

Zela Greets the Sun

Fanfare!

Fanfare!

This picture was inspired by the first movement of the Red Pony Suite by Copland. I tried the backlight thing, where the light sort of wraps around the figure. It didn’t work so well, and she has terrible ears. Maybe it’s that her head is too small. And by the way, her sword hilt design is finalized; at least it was in the profile avatar sketch and I used it again here. Her hair is too long.

Sketch for Zela avatar

When I get my hands on my sword...

When I get my hands on my sword…

I leave today after lunch, so here is a meaningful picture. It’s the pencil sketch I drew in preparation for making a new website design; probably this one. Yes, this website had been brewing for at least a year before I put it up. And you didn’t see Elfinessé 1 or Zela’s Page, both of which have been around for a couple of years, and both of which are junk. Comparatively.

She looks nice in this picture.

So this sketch is for my avatar. I had trouble with the positioning of the hand, and also I forgot to draw in the hair before I scanned it. So I free-handed the hair in Photoshop when I coloured it (more on that later, when I put up the colour version) with a mouse. And I still didn’t know how to do ears, which is another setback. Maybe I should recolour it!

Zela Small Family Portrait

We should have dressed up a bit more... at least Mom let her hair down

We should have dressed up a bit more… at least Mom let her hair down

Yes, one of my faceless pictures. Hey, I think it works, and even looks good sometimes. Family portrait of the first four members of Zela’s family. The other five I didn’t have character designs yet for. Though, I did write their names on the side, in preparation… and it looks like wise Bayn has his name as Bayn-nu. Well, I don’t know. Anyway, Zela’s got her hair loose for once, and the pose sort of works, but their feet all look stupid. And Flairé must be shy about his hands or something.

Zela’s height

My ability to draw bad guys is still very, very poor

My ability to draw bad guys is still very, very poor

This picture is of the varying heights of different people in Zela’s world. Some of them don’t exist anymore, not because they went extinct, but because now they weren’t yet created. Us, for example. Anyway, the hulk on the left is Sicassa, spelled Menad Sicaca. Ugh, inconsistant c. Then there’s Lyrilna’s head. He’s a giant snake, and I mean giant. I don’t know where he lives, but it’s believed that he’s actually Zela’s grandson in some fashion. It will all be explained in good time, or even earlier if you keep your wits about you. Then there’s Zela, good old 7′ tall. I think they’ve actually been growing, because a recent picture of Flairé made him to be about 9′ tall.
Flairé: We have different feet, so we’re 7′ tall in our measurement. Yeah, that works.
And then there’s a tall human. The Hero-type, right? Height confers nobility? And finally a short fat human. With a thick neck and a small head. -_- On purpose, though.
